How Much Would $1,000 Invested in Tesla’s IPO Be Worth Today?
March 5, 2020

Tesla has had an enormous price surge in 2020. The stock almost doubled since the beginning of the year and hit a record high of $968.99 in early February.

But that move is tiny compared with TSLA’s gain since its initial public offering (IPO) a decade ago.

Did you know TSLA first sold shares for $17 in June 2010? Investors entering at that time would be up almost 4,200 percent, and a $1,000 investment would be worth nearly $42,000. That’s enough to buy a brand-new 2020 Tesla Model 3.

Other vehicles from the company include the Model S luxury sedan, the Model X SUV and the Model Y crossover. TSLA’s been a pioneer in fields like electric vehicles, autopiloting, ultrasonic safety features and zero-emission manufacturing.

Elon Musk Takes the Wheel

The company was founded in 2003. Elon Musk, already wealthy from his stake in PayPal (PYPL), joined the next year and became CEO in 2008.

TSLA has had two big runs so far. The first took place between April 2013 and September 2014 as the shares soared from about $35 to $290. It moved sideways for the next five years before roaring to life in October. Traders piled on board and have made it the most popular stock at TradeStation so far in 2020.

While there have been highs and lows on the way up, it’s important to note that any individual stock can over or underperform, and past returns do not predict future results.

Finally, TSLA might be the best-known clean-energy firm. But, it’s not the only one. Investors are concerned about the environment more than ever. They’ve also targeted solar-energy recently and companies associated with lithium batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. Keep reading Market Insights for more on those!
